Training

Musselshell Helitack strives to maintain the highest standard of safety while conducting both aviation and firefighting operations.  This can be a challenge considering they are both high risk environments.  High levels of proficiency are maintained through continuous training in aviation and firefighting as well as from practical field experience.  Personnel spend their first 1 – 2 weeks in the classroom receiving basic training and refresher courses in forest policies and procedures, fireline safety, aviation safety, first aid/CPR, and defensive driving.  Employees have opportunities for more advanced training as well, often taking place in winter and early spring. We also understand the benefit of off forest fire assignments and are open to making crewmembers available for such when local preparedness levels permit.  This allows crewmembers to gain valuable experience in a wide variety of aviation and firefighting operations.

Due to the high physical demands of wildland firefighting, the crew is expected to maintain a high level of physical fitness during fire season, as well as in the off-season.  During the season, each day begins with 1 to 1 ½ hrs of physical training.  The main focus of this training is cardiovascular, but also includes strength and flexibility.  This improves our health, safety, and overall wellness, reducing our risk of injury and illness, and increasing our ability to do work.  Each crewmember is required to pass an annual physical and a “Work Capacity Test” at the arduous level which consists of a 3 mile hike with a 45lb pack in 45 minutes.  Failure to complete this test will lead to dismissal.  Additional fitness goals consist of:

  • 1.5 mile run in 11:40 minutes or less
  • 20 push-ups in 1 minute
  • 30 sit-ups in 1 minute
  • 5 pull-ups
